Our History

Originally opened as the Red Star Camp in the winter of 1936-37, Sleeping Giant officially
opened in 1938 and is one of Americas oldest ski areas. Over the next 60 years, the area was improved and enjoyed by local residents and visitors alike. By the early 1990s the lodge was in need of renovation and improvements to the facilities were required in order for the area to maintain its marketability. In 1993, the lodge was renovated, and a two-man chairlift was installed. In spite of these modernizations, skier visitations continued to decline eventually forcing the closing
of operations after the 2003 2004 ski season. The U.S. Forest Service permit was revoked in
2007 due to concerns regarding the safety of the facilities.

In April, 2007 a local group, led by Jim Nielson, began negotiations to reopen Sleeping Giant.
A preliminary analysis revealed that improvements necessary to reopen the Area would cost approximately $3,500,000. Yellowstone Recreations Foundation (YRF) was created as a non-profit organization to provide winter economic development for Cody and Powell, and the Big Horn Basin. As its first project, YRF began the planning process to re-open Sleeping Giant.

The re-awakening included plans for significant improvements to the Area and an emphasis on creating a hub of activity for winter activities
in the area. Sleeping Giant will offer an improved alpine ski experience, a lodge and restaurant for those enjoying the Area, and a central meeting place for those interested in Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, and, wildlife sightseeing. The first phase of the project began in the spring of 2008, when YRF commenced work to replace the bridge across the North Fork of
the Shoshone River.
